For the sea<br>is his; he owns it, as Emperors own empires; other seamen having but a<br>right of way through it. Merchant ships are but extension bridges;<br>armed ones but floating forts; even pirates and privateers, though<br>following the sea as highwaymen the road, they but plunder other ships,<br>other fragments of the land like themselves, without seeking to draw<br>their living from the bottomless deep itself. The Nantucketer, he alone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>resides and riots on the sea; he alone, in Bible language, goes down to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>those days, the captain\u2019s authority was restricted to the navigation<br>and general management of the vessel; while over the whale-hunting<br>department and all its concerns, the Specksnyder or Chief Harpooneer<br>reigned supreme. In the British Greenland Fishery, under the corrupted<br>title of Specksioneer, this old Dutch official is still retained, but<br>his former dignity is sadly abridged. At present he ranks simply as<br>senior Harpooneer; and as such, is but one of the captain\u2019s more<br>inferior subalterns. Nevertheless, as upon the good conduct of the<br>harpooneers the success of a whaling voyage largely depends, and since<br>in the American Fishery he is not only an important officer in the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>boat, but under certain circumstances (night watches on a whaling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>give us Jonah looking out of that eye!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nor are the most conscientious compilations of Natural History for the<br>benefit of the young and tender, free from the same heinousness of<br>mistake. Look at that popular work \u201cGoldsmith\u2019s Animated Nature.\u201d In<br>the abridged London edition of 1807, there are plates of an alleged<br>\u201cwhale\u201d and a \u201cnarwhale.\u201d I do not wish to seem inelegant, but this<br>unsightly whale looks much like an amputated sow; and, as for the<br>narwhale, one glimpse at it is enough to amaze one, that in this<br>nineteenth century such a hippogriff could be palmed for genuine upon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>any intelligent public of schoolboys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of the middle ribs, which measured eight feet and some inches. From<br>that part, the remaining ribs diminished, till the tenth and last only<br>spanned five feet and some inches. In general thickness, they all bore<br>a seemly correspondence to their length. The middle ribs were the most<br>arched. In some of the Arsacides they are used for beams whereon to lay<br>footpath bridges over small streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In considering these ribs, I could not but be struck anew with the<br>circumstance, so variously repeated in this book, that the skeleton of<br>the whale is by no means the mould of his invested form.
